Early life

As noted earlier, Nikola Tesla was an inventor, electrical engineer, and physicist born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, a village in modern-day Croatia. He was a curious kid with a passion for all that was happening around him and was always keen on knowing the underlying mechanics of any situation. His father was a priest and a novelist, and his mother invented tools to help with housework. Tesla had an incredible imagination and passion for science, which was inspired by his parents, especially his mother, an inventor.

Tesla finished his early learning at the Higher Real Gymnasium in Karlovac, where he was a good student and completed his four-year course in three years. He was particularly good at mathematics and physics, disciplines on which he would later base his inventions. Tesla then moved to the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz, Austria, to study electrical engineering; here, he encountered the theory of alternating current, an area of interest for him later on.

Tesla experienced financial and health issues. He did not complete his studies at the university but later attended the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. However, he never finished his degree. However, he was a well-educated man with a curiosity and desire for self-learning.

Career Beginnings

Tesla had $10, a suitcase, and a letter of introduction when he arrived in the United States in 1884. In New York City, he gained employment with the famous inventor Thomas Edison. Still, there was a difference in the attitude of Tesla and Edison towards their work. While Tesla was more interested in mathematical theories and conceptual innovations in electrical supply, Edison was more pragmatic. Still, Tesla enhanced the DC generators designed by Edison to a great extent.

The two did not work together for long because of their disagreement on the issue of electricity, namely AC and DC. Tesla later left Edison’s company to pursue his ideas. After securing investments, he founded the Tesla Electric Company in 1887. He designed many devices that functioned on AC currents, such as induction motors and other instruments.

Alternating Current (AC)

It is essential to note that Tesla made a huge impact in the industry of electrical engineering, mainly via the establishment of AC electric power. Earlier, the method of providing supply of electricity was the Edison’s direct current (DC) system before the innovations of Tesla. 

However, its disadvantage includes high power loss over long distances, which lead to the development of another type of electrical transmission system. While the direct current was useful for power generation and distributing it from a central location to consumers, Tesla discovered that the AC could be transmitted over large distances with little loss of power. He made a pioneering contribution that enabled the development of the central AC electrical power systems used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

The Tesla Coil, a type of resonance transformer circuit, is another one of Tesla’s remarkable inventions that he decided to patent in 1891. Tesla Coil can generate very high voltage and very small amounts of current electricity that has high frequency and is AC. Tesla first developed the coil for studying transmission of electrical energy and signals without external wires. But it was taken up quickly in radio technology, electrical experiments, and as an invention intended to be utilized in educational phenomena. Today, Tesla Coils are employed in various scientific and engineering processes, proving Tesla's intelligence and forward-thinking.

As much as he knew transmitting messages and power through the air was impossible in his time, he strongly believed this tower was capable of doing so. Tesla famously aimed high, he even thought of the future where information transfer and energy in a way was as free as the wind.

Thankfully, Tesla had you covered, and I commend the company for the bonuses and trying to do the right thing. He was eager to carry out the notion of transmitting power without wires, like some form of spell. Tesla conducted numerous experiments to explore the possibility of wireless power transmission. While we are not yet using technologies akin to charging a cell phone without being physically touching it like to charge across rooms, Tesla’s innovation birthed some modern wireless charging technologies.

Tesla even said he could generate an earthquake using a device he invented to demonstrate this claim. Well, you won’t believe this, but there is such a thing as an earthquake machine and no, it’s not a joke. Even as the scientific community was left scratching their heads and critics effectively raising their eyebrows, Tesla did not bat an eyelid. Whether this invention was a reality or a product of Tesla's vivid imagination, it adds an intriguing element to the narrative of Tesla's extraordinary life.
