Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America and a significant part of American history. He took the United States through its Civil War and was instrumental in the eradication of slavery. Lincoln, who led the country during one of the most challenging periods in U.S. history, is widely regarded as a man of high integrity, compassion, and commitment to national unity. He is rightfully called 'The Great Emancipator'. Several things define Lincoln's presidency, such as the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. These and other achievements have placed him on a high pedestal, with monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., symbolizing his impact on society.

Life and achievements

Early life

Abraham Lincoln was born on the twelfth of February in 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, farmers who struggled to make ends meet. Lincoln had a very tragic childhood; when he was only nine, his mother passed away, which was a big shock for him. His father got married again a year later, and his stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston, encouraged him to go to school and read. Lincoln received little formal education, attending several schools for a total of less than one year. However, his curiosity and self-education, which he got from books such as the Bible, Aesop's Fables, and Shakespeare's plays, contributed to his intellectual growth.

Entry into Politics

Lincoln started his political career at the age of 23 when he vied for a place in the Illinois State Legislature in 1832. While he failed in this first contest, he did not give up and was elected the following year, in 1834. He was a member of the Whig Party, and as such, he concentrated on areas such as infrastructure and education since he considered them vital for the progress of the nation. While serving in the Illinois Legislature, Lincoln gained experience in legal practice and public speaking. People learned of the rationality of his speeches and that he could relate to the commoner. His stand against the Mexican-American War and the spread of slavery was a sign of his increasing political power.

Lincoln also started taking a more active position against slavery during the contest with Senator Stephen Douglas in the Senate of Illinois in 1858. While he failed in the elections, the debates helped him gain a national profile. He spoke in such solid and lucid terms against the further spread of slavery. Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party for President in 1860. The Republican Party was founded in the 1850s and consisted of anti-slavery and proponents of modern economic policies. The North was against the spread of slavery, and Lincoln promised to fight this vice. Therefore, he was elected as the 16th President of the United States of America.

Legacy

Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, is considered one of Lincoln's most important accomplishments. This executive order abolished all slavery within the Confederate states. Though it did not absolve all slaves, it changed the course of the Civil War by making it a war for the liberation of slaves.

The Gettysburg Address

On November 19, 1863, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, a short but very effective speech about liberty, equality, and democracy. The speech was delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and is one of the most widely recognized speeches in the United States of America.

Lincoln's Leadership Style

Lincoln was a compassionate, honest, and determined war leader, especially during the Civil War. He persevered for the Union even when there were many troubles and defeats. For those reasons, he is remembered for his capacity to listen, make sound decisions, and, most importantly, set the right moral tone.

Lincoln's Vision of Unity

Lincoln firmly believed in the concept of the nation's unity, especially when the Civil War tore the country apart. He wanted to maintain the Union and bring back the divided country together. His attempts to solve division and conflict and stressing a reunion after the war indicated his desire for a united United States of America.

Lincoln's leadership offers valuable lessons for today's leaders. His honesty, empathy, and effective communication are qualities that remain relevant in any organizational setting. This is an essential lesson on how one must persevere in his endeavours and look for a way to solve the problems facing him through cooperation.

In general, Lincoln's legacy is not confined to his years in the presidency. His fight for civil rights and equality paved the way for the subsequent movements of justice. His leadership during the Civil War still refers to leaders struggling with tough times, and his dream of democracy and freedom is still known worldwide.
