Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor and electrical engineer whose work on alternating-current (AC) power helped make electricity practical to generate and send across long distances. Born in 1856 in the village of Smiljan, then part of the Austrian Empire and now in Croatia, he built his reputation in the United States during the 1880s and 1890s. His polyphase AC system, the induction motor, and the high-voltage coil that carries his name remain part of the working vocabulary of electrical engineering. Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, one of five children of Milutin Tesla, an Eastern Orthodox priest, and Georgina Mandić. He attended the Higher Real Gymnasium in Karlovac, then studied at the technical college in Graz starting in 1875, where he first examined the workings of alternating current. He left Graz without a degree and briefly attended lectures at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague around 1880. By 1881 Tesla was working at the Budapest Telephone Exchange, and in 1882 he joined the Continental Edison Company in Paris. During these years he worked out the principle of a motor driven by a rotating magnetic field, an idea he would spend the next decade turning into hardware. In 1884 he emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York with a letter of introduction to Thomas Edison. Tesla joined the Edison Machine Works in 1884 but stayed only about six months, parting ways over pay and over a deeper technical disagreement. Edison had committed to direct current (DC), while Tesla was convinced that alternating current was the better way to move power over distance. After a lean stretch, Tesla found backers and in 1887 set up a laboratory where he built working induction motors. In May 1888 he received his patent for the electro-magnetic motor and presented his paper on polyphase AC to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. That July, the industrialist George Westinghouse licensed Tesla's polyphase patents, and Tesla spent about a year advising Westinghouse engineers in Pittsburgh. The competition between Edison's DC system and the Westinghouse-Tesla AC system became known as the War of the Currents. Edison publicized the dangers of high-voltage AC, but the economics of long-distance transmission favored Tesla's approach. Two projects effectively settled the matter: in 1893 the Westinghouse AC system lit the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1896 the hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls, built on Tesla's polyphase design, began sending power to Buffalo more than 20 miles away. Alternating current became the standard for electric power worldwide, and the induction motor still drives countless machines today. Tesla was granted US citizenship in 1891, held roughly 300 patents across many countries, and experimented with high-frequency currents, wireless lighting, and radio. In 1960 the international unit of magnetic flux density was named the tesla in his honor. His later projects were less successful. The Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island, funded in part by J. P. Morgan and intended for wireless transmission, was never completed and was demolished in 1917. Tesla's reputation has since attracted a good deal of myth, but the documented record stands on its own. In 1943, months after his death, the US Supreme Court invalidated a key Marconi radio patent in a ruling that recognized Tesla's earlier tuned-circuit work, though the decision did not name him the sole inventor of radio. Tesla died on 7 January 1943 in a room at the Hotel New Yorker, largely broke, and for most of the next fifty years he was a supporting character in a story about Edison. The revival, when it came, did not come from universities. It came from the internet, and it eventually bought him a building. In August 2012 the cartoonist Matthew Inman launched a crowdfunding campaign to buy Wardenclyffe, the ruined Long Island laboratory where Tesla had built his unfinished transmitting tower. It raised 450,000 dollars in the first day and about 1.37 million in total from more than 33,000 people, New York State matched it, and in May 2013 the non-profit Tesla Science Center bought the site. A laboratory was saved by readers of a comic strip. The enthusiasm has run ahead of the evidence in places, and Tesla is now claimed for a great many things he did not do, which is its own kind of forgetting. What is not in dispute is on every physics paper that measures a magnetic field: the SI unit of magnetic flux density is the tesla, adopted in 1960. The car company took the name in 2003, and for a large part of the world that is now where the name comes from. Tesla's story shows how a single technical idea, carefully worked out and defended, can reshape everyday life for generations that follow. We keep his profile because his legacy rests on a verifiable record of patents, public demonstrations, and working infrastructure rather than on legend.
