The list matters less than the listening. On timing, follow-up questions, the uses of silence, and the small etiquette of recording the people you love.

The question is the smaller half

Every family historian eventually goes looking for a list of questions, and lists exist — we keep a hundred of them ourselves. But a list is a map, not a journey. Hand the world's best question to someone who asks it at the wrong moment, talks over the answer, and checks their phone during the pause, and they will get nothing. Hand a mediocre question to someone who has learned to wait, and they will get the story the family repeats for fifty years. This essay is about the larger half: how to ask. There is a reason the researchers who study this call it listening. The psychologists Robyn Fivush and Marshall Duke at Emory University spent years measuring what children know of their family's stories and found that knowing more of them travelled with higher self-esteem, a stronger sense of control, and better resilience in hard times. The stories do real work. They only get told if someone asks properly.

Timing: catch people sideways

Almost nobody talks well on demand. "Sit down, I want to ask you about your life" is a well-meant sentence that makes the shutters come down; it announces an occasion, and occasions make people formal. People talk sideways. They talk while their hands are busy — shelling peas, drying dishes, sorting a drawer of photographs that "needs doing anyway." They talk in cars, where the road excuses eye contact. They talk at the table after a meal, in the loose half-hour when the plates haven't been cleared. They talk when one particular person is in the room and, often, only then — every family has its unlockers, and if Auntie Mai gets stories out of your grandfather that nobody else does, your job is to be nearby with a phone when Auntie Mai visits. Time of day matters more than we admit, especially with the very old, who are often clearest and most expansive in the morning and tired of questions by evening. And a story alluded to is an appointment to keep: "you mentioned the flood at the shop — will you tell me the whole thing on Sunday?" flatters precisely because it proves you were listening the first time.

Follow-ups: the second question is the real one

First answers are usually the polished coin — the version worn smooth by forty years of telling. It is a fine version. It is also where most conversations stop, and the treasure is one layer down. The follow-up that reaches it is almost embarrassingly simple. "What happened then?" "What did that feel like?" "What did your mother say when you told her?" And the best of them all: pick up the smallest concrete detail and hand it back. If the story of emigrating mentions, in passing, a suitcase with a broken clasp, ask about the suitcase. The rehearsed story has no prepared answer for the suitcase — so the person has to go back to the actual morning, the actual kitchen, and look. That is the moment the telling changes register, and you will hear it happen. Concrete beats abstract at every turn. "Were you happy?" produces philosophy; "what did Sunday smell like in that house?" produces a scene, and scenes carry the feelings inside them.

Silence is a question

The hardest skill in this whole craft is doing nothing. An answer ends, a silence opens, and every social instinct you own rushes to fill it. Resist for five seconds — count them if you must — because a remembering person who has stopped talking has usually not stopped remembering. What arrives after the pause is routinely the truest thing said all afternoon: the correction, the confession, the "actually, what I really remember is..." This is oral-history practice as old as the tape recorder, and it is why the interviewers at StoryCorps — the American oral-history project whose recorded conversations are archived at the Library of Congress — coach participants to treat the question list as a starting point and the listening as the work. Nodding keeps a silence warm. A new question closes it. The same patience applies to tears. If a story brings them, do not lunge for a cheerful subject; sit with it, and let the teller decide whether to go on. Being trusted with the sad stories is not a conversation going wrong. It is the conversation going right.

The etiquette of the recorder

Recording adds three small courtesies to everything above. Ask first, every time — "I'd love to keep this; mind if I record?" — and take a no gracefully, because the no preserves the trust that makes the next yes possible. Make the device boring: face-down on the table, notifications off, never touched again until the end, since a glanced-at phone tells the teller their story is competing with something. And honour "turn that off" instantly and cheerfully. Off-the-record stories are not lost; they are the price of admission, and they often come back on the record a year later, once the teller has seen what you do with the rest. A short list to be going on with

The full hundred live at 100 questions to ask relatives. But you only need one to start, and the ones below share a shape worth noticing — each is concrete, sensory, and small enough to walk through a big door.

What did your mother's kitchen smell like on a Sunday?
What was the first thing you ever bought with your own money?
Who was your best friend when you were ten — and what happened to them?
What did people get wrong about you when you were young?
Which song can you not hear without thinking of somebody?
What do you know about the day you were born?
What is something your parents never found out you did?

Notice there is no "tell me about your life." Lives are answered in scenes, not summaries; ask for the scene and the life comes with it.

Ask this week

The people who hold your family's stories will not announce when the last good telling is. That is not said to frighten you — only to move one small thing up the list. Pick one question. Pick the relative whose voice you would miss most. Find a sideways moment this week, put the phone face-down between you, and ask. Then be quiet, and let the answer take the long way round.
