Feb 4, 2024 Spring awakens China and colours the country with blossoming flowers and lush greenery of new leaves. However, one festival that is celebrated during this period, associated with respect for ancestors, is Qingming. It is not just a day to visit cemeteries; Qingming or Tomb Sweeping Day is a time to pay respect to our ancestors, respect their memory, and appreciate what they left behind for us.

A Bridge Between Generations: Qingming and Remembering Ancestors

For many centuries, the Qingming Festival has connected past and present generations. People come to cleanse the tombs and graves, clean the tombstones, and offer food and drinks to the ancestors. These are not only bodily activities that involve cleaning body parts; instead, they are a form of acknowledging and appreciating. Thus, the families recall their ancestors and continue being part of the lineage that started ages ago.

What is more, the Qingming Festival involves not only taking care of the physical tombs butt also burying the dead. This is when people tell their generations’ stories, accomplishments, struggles, knowledge, accomplishments, struggles, knowledge, and even jokes. They provide the younger generation with a way of identifying themselves and relating to the previous generations.
