They are essential components of the self. They convey meaning and context, channel and store information and knowledge, forge relationships, maintain culture, and maintain group identification and cohesion even in the face of change. Culture is intangible and stored in people's memories. It is the history, beliefs, attitudes, and traditions of a society. Cultural memory, as the knowledge available within a culture and passed on from one generation to another, links the past and the present. Oral traditions, songs, and ceremonies are the ways through which culture is maintained, current, and exciting.
For example, many indigenous peoples' memories are historical, ecological, and moral. These living traditions show how culture is never static but is instead a dynamic part of life that changes continually.
