Thanks to technological advancements, people have a way of preserving memories from when they were young up to the present through social media. But this makes memory preservation tricky with digital tools. Technology is a great friend; it provides storage and makes information easily accessible. However, it can also be a threat, vulnerable to data corruption, becoming outdated, and, in some cases, the information it was designed to preserve may gradually disappear.

The Allure of the Digital: The Society of Convenience and Abundance

The advancement in technology has made it possible for everyone to store memories. It is now a thing of the past to store photos and videos in albums and tapes and keep them in boxes. People use their smartphones and cloud storage to document their experiences endlessly. Pictures, videos, and even voice notes can be shared and posted easily with a click of a button, and they can be easily retrieved from anywhere with an internet connection. This has made it easier for people to record everything that happens in their day-to-day lives compared to the past.

It involves writing and storing information, as in the analogue system. Other platforms, such as Confinity, also have organizational features where one can sort memories, write descriptions, and even compile a timeline presentation. These features give the digital archive vitality and turn it into a story of one’s life. Also, the use of social networks and other digital technologies enables people to communicate with their family and publish photos and messages that reflect past events. Nevertheless, the digital space is a somewhat risky territory for memory storage. Mishaps such as a hard drive failure, corrupted data, or even an inability to recover a password can cause irreplaceable memories to be lost. Also, technology changes make storage formats irrelevant. Can you even begin to imagine how it would be to try to access a floppy disk from the 1990s today? Thus, the constantly changing technical environment is a significant challenge in maintaining the long-term availability of digital memories.

The Erosion of Memory: Digital Abundance: The Paradox

Here is the paradox of the digital memories: As we take more pictures and videos of everything in our lives, we may forget how to live in the moment. The act of remembering shifts from an absorptive and internal process to a more mechanic one of scrolling through digital archives. This overdependence on external storage can hamper the growth of natural memory and reduce the sentimental value of the information stored in it.
